Bourton Wool Felt Hat

The Bourton is a trilby with a crown that distinguishes it at a glance. Where most felt hats carry a pinched or creased crown, the Bourton is finished with a circular indentation — a clean, symmetrical press that gives the hat a rounder, more considered profile and a silhouette that is recognisably its own. It is the kind of detail that separates a hat designed with intention from one simply produced to a pattern.

The felt is the finest Merino wool, sourced and felted in Portugal before travelling to Christys' factory in Oxfordshire. There, following the traditional method the brand has maintained since its founding, brim and crown are crafted separately — each shaped individually before being united and finished with fine ribbons chosen to complement the precise shade of the hat. It is a construction process that takes longer than modern alternatives and produces a result that reflects every additional hour.

Inside, the Bourton carries two details that mark it as a hat finished without compromise. The red lining — stamped with the Christys' crest — is the brand's signature interior finish, present here as a declaration of provenance rather than ornament. The leather sweatband sits smooth and considered against the head, developing its own character with wear in the way that only genuine leather does.

Four colourways are offered — Black, Brown, Navy and Bessemer. Each is the same hat, made to the same standard, wearing with a different character. The Bourton in Bessemer — that deep, industrial grey-blue — is perhaps the most considered choice of the four, for a wearer who has looked at the range carefully and settled on something that will not be immediately obvious to anyone who has not done the same.
